Dynamic DNS by GEN

DNS that keeps up with your network

Keep a hostname pointed at a changing address, or drive your records from code for failover and load balancing. Built on over thirty years of running DNS at GEN.

~ gendns
# What address do we see you on?
$ curl https://www.gendns.uk/ip
216.73.216.237

# Point office.gendns.uk at it
$ curl "https://www.gendns.uk/dns?h=office&u=…&p=…"
good 216.73.216.237

# Run it again and nothing has changed

What you get

More than a hostname that follows you

GENDNS combines traditional DNS with the tools modern, changeable infrastructure needs, whether that is one NAS at home or a cluster across several clouds.

Dynamic DNS

Works with the DDNS clients you already have, including Synology NAS and ddclient. When your address changes, your record follows.

Programmatic control

A real-time API for managing records from your own automation, so failover and traffic distribution happen without anyone logging in.

Non-standard records

Support for non-standard resource records, for the custom DNS configurations other providers will not touch.

OverSight integration

Fully integrated with OverSight, GEN's infrastructure monitoring, so records can change based on what monitoring sees.

Dynamic responses

Answers that vary with geographic location or server health, plus programmatic responses for more complex routing and traffic logic.

Load balancer friendly

Integrates with load balancers and service discovery systems, keeping DNS in step with the services behind it.

How it works

Three steps, then forget about it

1

Get your credentials

We set up your hostname and zone, and issue a username and secret tied to your GEN account.

2

Point your client at us

Enter one update URL in your NAS, router or script. Anything that can make an HTTPS request will do.

3

Your record stays current

Each time your address changes, the client tells us and the DNS record is updated straight away.

Works with

Synology DSM ddclient Routers with custom DDNS curl, scripts and cron
